I’m in this picture and I don’t like it
How Boomer.
It’s a choice WHAT one consumes. To me it’s like the asshats at work who were actually excited to “return to office.” You know full well who has a shitty home life they’re escaping, and this is similar. People who are incapable of doing something about it.
Consume better content. Tune it out. Easy enough.
I mean, I can’t choose what posts appear in my feed when viewing everything from everywhere. Eventually some shitty headline is gonna bum me out. But it’s also pretty easy to not dwell on it. I have other shitty things not related to the Internet or news I can dwell on and be equally depressed about. 😤
We are literally on memes, and look at the post.
Me, tired of staring at medium rectangle all day, finally going home to turn on the big rectangle, and watch tiny rectangle.
One gives cortisol, the other 2 give dopamine and serotonin, respectively.
Me when tiny rectangle gives cortisol instead of dopamine: 🤯
I purged world news from my feeds years ago. I have no idea what’s going and I love it.
Here’s my filter list if you want it:
israel, iran, cybertruck, north korea, tesla, israeli, russia, belarus, palestine, palestinian, trump, biden, rogan, ukraine, china, politics, democrat, republican, america, usa, government, law, war, conflict, weapon, vance, biden, harris, election, kamala, dnc, rnc, conflict, tensions, elon, musk, greene, boebert, soldier, military, bomb, attack, conflict
There’s really not much that slips by this list in tandem with my community block list. Life on the internet is much more peaceful now.
I also dont watch news and havent for a decade. Its not like im missing something important, since I get to hear about anything actually important anyway. It would be hard to miss things like covid where we actually need to take action. Even here on Lemmy, people seem to be discussing a lot of current events in the news, so… Dont need to watch TV news.
I don’t filter at all, I don’t like the chance of false positives. Like I’m sick of content about a particular EV company, but I wouldn’t want to miss news about them dumping their CEO
It’s not hard to scroll past stuff I don’t like
I think you’re describing an important step of online mental hygiene. The reality is that humans have not evolved with the daily emotional bandwidth necessary for one to handle a planet’s worth of grief responsibly and without inuring oneself to others’ suffering.
I’ve seen people criticize this as head-in-sand, that you should remain available to amplify voices and causes in online discourse (especially theirs). I see that criticism as unthoughtful, bordering on unkind, and a critical problem with how we do online advocacy.
(Aside: “conflict” appears twice in keyword list, which has no effect now but can cause unexpected behavior later)
I’ve experienced that criticism. To that I say I already know where I stand on these political issues and I’ll amplify (and have amplified) voices I want amplified. Regardless of how much I filter out, the dust on the upper crust of world news still makes its way to me in some way or another so I’ll always have a general idea of what’s going on. I just don’t need to know every tiny detail about the trillionth example of the dregs of human nature.
Living out from under that black cloud is truly liberating and I highly recommend anyone reading this to establish a filter list and block any communities that regularly kill your mood.
I would but then there is nothing to read when I open Lemmy 5min after I close it. Need that hit.
Exactly! Without the news, what am I supposed to do, look at cute cat and dog memes all day? Uh, no, there are only a finite amount of those on lemmy…
Its not a bad thing to close lemmy 5 mins after you open it. There’s a whole world outside of the internet.

You gotta hit that “/all top 6 hours” feed
To give you a minor update, you’re gonna need to add ‘nuke’ and ‘nuclear’ to your blocklist… as well as ‘housing crash’, ‘housing values’ and ‘prices’ and ‘debt’ and ‘default’.
Add in those words and you’ll remain blissfully ignorant for at least another couple months.
Unfortunately I do need to read the news incase certain things happen
Yep, influencers want you constantly connected to the doom-sayers.
At one time getting the weekly newspaper was sufficient.
Then CNN happened with cable.
I did the same and would absolutely recommend this.
Don’t look for news on social media (best to not be on social media if that’s possible). Get news and content via RSS and get an app that allows you to blacklist keywords.
Got any suggestions on how to set that up? I’ve known about RSS for a long time, I just never really understood it, I guess.
What device are you going to use it on? I’ll presume Android is most likely.
Best app for FOSS in my opinion is Read You (on f-droid), but this doesnt allow blacklisting words.
Best for easy setup + setting up filters is Pluma (free on Play store). Once you’re in it, you press + to add content and can search for whatever you want.
Most sites support RSS and if you candidate find it from within the app then you can go get the RSS link from the webpage… But if you’re just getting into it then try what I’ve suggested above first and take it from there.
This is why I primarily use my phone to eye fuck the nastiest hardcore porn into my brain. If it’s all going to shit I might as well be gooned the fuck out
Becoming a therapist and telling all my patients to goon more
It turns out you can just not do that, I’m moving away from my phone in general since the internet sucks and I don’t see the point anymore and I’ve been a lot happier for it. Nothing is stopping anyone from just not doomscrolling
Nothing is beamed directly to your phone, it’s a broadcast, so waves n stuff.
I think they meant the phone is beaming the horrific news to their face which is inches away, not that the horrific news is beamed directly to their phone
But underneath it’s just unicast to your phone, no?
But anyway, beamed directly it may be, it’s called beamforming.
In the world of 5G, this is the act of focusing a wireless signal in a specific direction. Compared to simply sending a signal across a wide area, beamforming requires more sophisticated antenna technology.
[…] Beamforming technology, on the other hand, sends a precise and concentrated signal right to your smartphone. It is more deliberate and intentional with its delivery method.
Tired of work screen, now is time for personal screen.
