Cancel Lemmy is a community on piefed which has the goal of being a space where people can discuss moving away from Lemmy, alternatives to Lemmy, and just general problems with Lemmy as a software and ecosystem. People are even free to discuss problems with the current management of Lemmy. If you have grievances or wish that more servers would just move on from Lemmy this is the community for you.

I think I’d rather do something constructive than in-fight on the Fediverse. Sure, Lemmy isn’t perfect. Not at all. I’d say love it for creating this online-space and pioneering the threaded conversations to some degree, hate the bad things about it. But don’t make this about hate itself or fighting. Instead, focus on constructivism and to create something positive. Focusing on the negativity (and even attracting such people by naming things a certain way) isn’t a good approach for that, if you ask me. I think it’s the wrong way of thinking. I mean this also needs to be discussed somewhere… But be careful with this. We have enough negativity on the internet. And this isn’t the idea behind Piefed.

I’m all aboard with new communities and new infrastructures, the more projects the best is for the whole structure.

That said, if your advertisement strategy is “we’re not Lemmy”, then no thanks. Everyone can do that.
Be more proactive, do something Lemmy doesn’t, and then we’ll talk about it.

Beyond Lemmy might have been a better naming option…Cancel, reads, harsh & insulting to the devs who have created this space, & those who enjoy & appreciate it…

Let me know when PieFed finds itself with a half decent frontend and mobile app.

Its just another move by either big tech themselves or lost people who pick up the forks for their masters.

I get it, lemmy devs are the big bad communists (everyone who watches news knows that socialism/communism are the least of our problems rn, au contraire!) And some of them have bad opinions apparently, boo-fucking-hoo.

They went ahead and made this place without even getting paid for it for a long time and they’re great to interact with from my pov.

So no, we dont want to cancel lemmy.

If I’m all for discussing and criticizing, the ‘Cancel’ part is most certainly not something I’m interested in or would want to be a part of. Maybe it’s just a poor naming choice?

Yeah, I’d be interested in something like “!lemmyalternatives”, but “cancel lemmy” just seems blatently and pointlessly antagonistic.

    Why?

Edit: And is piefed a fork or something completely different. I guess you could just not like the developers, although I feel like cancellation is more headspace than a goofy conspiracy theory deserves.

I know language wars are overdone, but I’m gonna say Python is not the correct choice here, when Lemmy can already get sluggish.

PHP was a weird choice for anything in the 2020’s, but Mbin is defunct anyway.

I’ll also comment to say that the “cancel” part of this is stupid and should be reconsidered. (There seems to be a pretty thorough consensus on that). Isn’t the whole point of this to have options, to spread the resources out to as many points as possible to prevent a single point of failure, corruption, or censorship?

I ended up at Piefed, because I’m interested in self-hosting, and I understand Python more than any of the other languages represented. That’s really the full depth of my choice, and I’m not sure there should be much more thought behind it other than “How does this particular software package perform and meet my needs?”

I think I’d distinguish between a voluntary boycott and a top-down choice by some media monopoly. The latter is what the fediverse is designed to avoid.

How close are you to self-hosting? I’m pretty curious what the overhead is like, since Python is intrinsically going to need more.

Not very. Still working on getting a VPN set up and learning the ropes of self-hosting in general. Most of the research I’ve been doing has mentioned that Piefed seems to take less resources than Lemmy for some reason. We’ll see how it goes once I actually figure all this out. I just learned that my choice of home internet might make it difficult since I apparently can’t get a static IP. (T mobile 5G)

Speaking for myself, while I’m not really happy about some of the political baggage associated with the lemmy dev team, and additionally would be interested in participating in discussion about non-lemmy server alternatives, I don’t really want to jump into something named quite as adversarially as “cancel_lemmy”.

That’s not to say that there isn’t potentially demand for and interest in this. It just crosses the line into getting more political on the matter than I’d like to be. But I would like to point out that it may be that there are other people who feel the same way, and might exclude some users who would otherwise participate.

EDIT: I’d also point out that while it’s not specifically directed to discussion of the Lemmy software package, [email protected] has a fair bit of discussion among people who are unhappy about the political side of the lemmy.ml, lemmygrad.ml, and hexbear.net instances and want to discuss that.

I’m all for promoting alternatives but as a mild critique i’ll say not knowing you or what you dislike about lemmy specifically, the “no matter the cost” part of the bio reads kinda creepy.

I was trying to convey that some people are against migrating due to data loss or having to restart their instance which I don’t think is a good reason. I can change it though if it doesn’t look good.

I kind of figured it was something like subscriber and data loss, but my immediate mental image when someone says that bit is like, way more dramatic than that because of its regular use in action movies.

could just be a sign i’ve watched too many movies, though.
