Compared to the usual game console os windows offers a A LOT of freedom, just because you personally hate windows does not make the statement any less true.

Plus if it runs windows then it will also run linux. So do like you would with every other pc on the market and install what you want.

OK, but the logical comparison here is not the OS on Switch, Xbox, PlayStation or any generic handheld, it’s to SteamOS, where Windows struggles to compete.

Like everyone else who “chooses” Windows, ROG has surrendered to what’s the default. Never mind that Windows has spent decades to position themselves that way through incentive, obstacle, and plain old coercion.

I don’t expect you to care about Microsoft’s business practices, but you ought to care that they didn’t achieve or maintain their market position by creating good software or giving a tiny shit about user freedom.

And compared to a naked mole rat I have a pretty face, but that’s not a particularly useful comparison, is it?

And how long is that freedom going to last until Microsoft attempts to lock it down like they tried with Windows 8?

Compared to the usual jail cell, the prison yard affers A LOT of freedom, just because you personally hate prison does not make the statement any less true.

No. When Microsoft is making the hardware, they can lock it down so nothing else can be installed. Mostly with signed boot loaders and drivers.

Remember when the PS3 actually allowed other operating system installations. Then, one day, they pushed out a new firmware that disabled that ability.

Maybe eventually someone figures out a hack. But these days, the hacks are complex enough, with many other available alternatives, that you’re looking at barely dozens of people doing it.
