Organic Maps leadership became sus, so the community forked.

tl;dr they began to introduce proprietary code and were caught using project funds on personal expenses and vacations.
Woah, I missed that the MNT mini laptop costs that much, that’s wildly out of my budget. I think the Mecha thing is much cheaper (and a better form factor), though I’m not sure if it can use cellular networks.
Don’t disagree with you there.
GrapheneOS only supports Google Pixel phones.
GrapheneOS have provided an update in a reddit thread, looks like you should be OK to go the pixel route. Check the OP for details.
If you mean when they say:
Having our own devices meeting our hardware requirements (https://grapheneos.org/faq#future-devices) would reduce the time pressure to migrate to new releases and could be used to obtain early access ourselves. Based on talks with OEMs, paying for what we need will cost millions of dollars.
I don’t think they’re saying that they will, they’re pointing out how expensive it would be to do so (I.E, unlikely as they do not have the funds to do it).
Further down they clarify when someone asks what they mean by a GrapheneOS device:
Working with an OEM partner to make devices built to run GrapheneOS. We have a list of hardware requirements at https://grapheneos.org/faq#future-devices which are provided by the currently supported devices (Pixels). It would be very hard to make new devices meeting our requirements. We would need the community to raise a substantial amount of money in advance by preordering devices. We would need to incorporate substantial costs for development and long term support into the device cost.
Edit:
I was wrong! Graphene has clarified that they will, in fact, pursue creating their own hardware. Check main OP for details.
they have kernel hardening shit and encrypt this and that and verifiable boot and evil maid safe and sandbox to prevent malicious apps to get at your shit and whatnot, and if you’re a MIT-educated Jason Bourne on the run from 5eyes or whoever, all of them things can come in handy.
Considering that a significant portion of the US population may be targeted by the regime at some point in the future, having a device that is more resistant and private against those threats is a massive boon.
If you’re not engaging in any resistance or are lucky enough to live in an area where that isn’t a concern, sure, those features aren’t essential, but they also don’t hurt in most cases (I’d want sandboxing no matter what, it’s just a nice layer of security against potentially compromised apps, which can be on any distribution platform).
the idea that a used phone that was touched and rubbed and spat all over and taken to the shitter and godknowswhatelse at $300 should be the entry barrier for not getting assraped on the reg, I don’t know what to tell you, except maybe check your privilege, idk.
I’m not really sure where this is coming from, since no one here ever suggested that LineageOS isn’t adequate for some (probably even most) use cases. I only spoke for myself, and I value privacy and security far more than the average person due to needing it.
Ehh… It’s probably safer than a stock android even somewhat outdated, but eventually there may be some severe exploit that will never get a fix.
You’re in a rough position right now, difficult to see what the future holds. Perhaps graphene overcomes this issue, perhaps not.
Hm, it should be. Are you not able to load the page, or does it still show the previous message about it being down for you?
Perhaps deleting the slrpnk.net cache/cookies in your browser might help?

It’s possible to export your Subscriptions, Community/instance blocks, and saved posts/comments to an account on a different instance by exporting your account’s JSON file, which you can do in your Account Settings page.
You can then import the JSON file in that same area on your alternative backup account, so that your experience is uninterrupted. Personally I would recommend making a backup account on Sopuli.xyz or Lemmy.cafe, they’ll give you the most similar vibe due to how their instances are set up.
So happy to be home again ^^
Cheers for mentioning that, I hadn’t heard of Phoenix, but looks like an excellent alternative.
Ooh, that’s nice. I could see that effectively replacing disqus comments below articles. Cool beans!
Glad to be of help and that you’re up and running! :D
