For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Long Day’s Journey into Night (2018), a surreal Chinese neo-noir/romance/mystery about a man who returns to his hometown after a twelve-year absence in pursuit of a woman he once loved. Things become weird from there as present, past, dream, and reality all collide in a mind-screwy fashion often compared to the works of David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Wong Kar-wai. It’s art. This is arguably the magnum opus of Chinese auteur Bi Gan, who is otherwise best-known for the similar Kaili Blues (2015), which we have not yet watched. This is one of the highest-rated films from mainland China on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.

After that is Nobody (2021), an action movie about a suburban dad (Bob Odenkirk) who goes on a roaring rampage of revenge after a pair of thieves rob his home. A whole lot of fistfighting and gun duels ensue as the protagonist battles his way to the top of the mob. Dudes are gonna rock. Director is Ilya Naishuller, the guy behind the live-action first-person shooter Hardcore Henry (2015), which we previously watched. As with that film, this one operates on video-game logic, with everything being as over-the-top as possible.
