For this Friday Movie Night, firs tup is Red Post on Escher Street (2020), a comedy about the wacky world of film extras, as the film jumps between the stories of the numerous would-be actors trying to get their big break with the most marginal roles on a big set as a director tries desperately to manage the chaos. Think Short Cuts (1993) or Magnolia (1999), but movie-themed. “Live-action anime” is a common refrain in the reviews for this one. Expect a whole lot of over-the-top antics. Director is Sion Sono, the guy behind the similarly cartoonish Why Don’t You Play in Hell? (2013), which we recently watched.

After that is The Sp**k Who Sat by the Door (1973), a political thriller about a black man recruited by the CIA to be their token black employee, at which point they treat him like garbage. Unfortunately for them, he uses this opportunity to learn the CIA’s secrets and then moonlights in a black revolutionary group in which he applies his insider knowledge to help destroy America. This is considered a classic of African-American and leftist cinema, and is the magnum opus of director Ivan Dixon, who is not known for much otherwise.
